The Mammoth Mine Rock Shop sits in the shadows of the Superstition Mountains. The shop is surrounded by many mines, mostly from yesteryear and actually sits on the most famous mine in the area, the Mammoth Mine, which was the richest gold mine in the U.S. when first discovered.
The name of the mine as well as the nearby town was a result of the mammoth proportions of gold that were supposed to be located at the site. There were also many challenges to working the ore at the mine site, thus a stamp mill was built on the banks of the San Pedro river to offer water accessibility.
The more well known mines from the area are the Tiger, Black Queen and the Tom Thumb. Tiger, Arizona was the townsite at the Tiger mine, but the ghost town has disappeared since. The mines around Tiger produced a variety of metals between the 1880s and 1950s, but Gold was the dominant mineral mined from the 1880s until World War I.
Minerals from the Mammoth Mine are found in all major mineral collections. The Mammoth Mine Rock Shop offers many samples for sale from the mammoth mine and surrounding mines. So, if you’re looking for authentic and unique Arizona gold specimens make sure to stop in!
